Any discomfort you have will be treated with appropriate pain medication.A variety of pain-relief methods are used at the Institute. Among them are intravenous drugs such as fentanyl and Demerol, anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen), and local anesthetics. Nerve blocks are highly effective and might be available to you. You will also be sent home with a pain medication that your surgeon will prescribe for you on the day of surgery. When do I get to go home?You will be able to go home when you are medically cleared by your surgeon and your anesthesiologist. We want to make your transition to home as care-free as possible.Who can stay with me in the recovery room?For most patients, the healing process is more comfortable with fewer people in the recovery room. However, we will be happy to accommodate your personal situation.What will I see in the operating room? The operating room’s specialized lighting system will project a very bright light onto your surgical bed. At the head of your bed, you’ll see the anesthesia machine. This very specialized and carefully maintained machine helps deliver anesthesia. Also in this area are the monitoring devices our surgical staff will use during your procedure. How long will my procedure last?Many circumstances determine the length of a specific procedure. Your surgeon will be able to give you a reasonable estimate. Your surgeon will discuss your surgery’s success with your family after your procedure. There is a good chance that you will not see your surgeon after your procedure as he will most likely be required to return to surgery. We will make every attempt to honor special requests and answer your questions.What do we do if we have questions once we are home?If your friend or family member has any questions about the discharge instructions, feel free to call the surgeons office twenty four hours a day seven days a week. |
