Home In-Home Exercise Program

Maintain Your Exercise Program
Exercise will help you regain your strength and range of motion. With continued exercise, you’ll likely gain more strength and range of motion than you had before your surgery, when pain might have limited movement.

Make exercise part of your daily routine. Continue meeting with your physical therapist as directed. In time, a stationary bike or other new exercises might be added to your program.

Control Swelling
Swelling is common after surgery and may get worse after exercise.
Here are some suggestions to reduce swelling:
  • Ice the area. Place the provided refillable ice pack on the area. Avoid placing ice directly on your skin, and don’t use ice for more than 20 minutes at a time. If you have an ice machine, please use it as directed.

  • Elevate your leg above your heart. Ask your health care provider about safe positions for doing this.

  • Continue doing ankle pumps. They help reduce swelling, improve circulation, and prevent blood clots.

Take It Easy
  • Slow down and rest when you need to.
  • Turn your entire body rather than twisting your knee.
  • Don’t force your knee into position. Avoid bending your knee too far.
  • Don’t do high-impact activities such as jumping, which could loosen your new knee joint.
