Page 3 of 3 Partial Knee Replacement Surgery: What to ExpectMost partial knee replacement surgeries take between one and two hours to complete. In the Operating Suite . . . Your orthopedic surgeon will make an incision over the side of the knee where the damaged cartilage is located. Your damaged or worn-away cartilage will be removed, and the bone will be reshaped to match the metal implants of the partial knee replacement. A special type of plastic known as polyethylene, is inserted between the metal implants. After your knee implant is in place, your orthopedic surgeon will check your new knee’s range of motion by bending and straightening your leg. When your surgeon is completely satisfied with the results, your incision will be closed, your knee will be bandaged, and you will be moved to a recovery room. If your surgery takes place at the Orthopedic & Sports Institute, you will have the benefit of recovering in the Fox River Room, our comfortable, hotel-like healing suite, where you will enjoy the very best, one-on-one, personalized care. Not long after that, you and your new knee will be off to a great start!
