Do I need surgery for my anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear?
The ACL is one of four main ligaments in the knee. It provides rotational stability and prevents the tibia from sliding out in front of the femur. ACL tears can be treated with or without surgery. In non-operative treatment, exercises help restore the knee to its pre-injury state and patients are educated on how to prevent instability. Brace wear is occasionally used. Unfortunately, many people who don’t have surgery experience further injury to the knee from repetitive instability episodes. Operative treatment involves reconstructing the ACL. This restores stability which allows return to aggressive activities and helps prevent further damage.
