Exercising after Joint Replacement Surgery

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle has many parts to it, and exercising is one of them. However, after undergoing a joint replacement surgery, exercising may be a little bit tricky. This is why it’s a good idea to talk to an orthopedic specialist in the Fox Valley before starting to workout again. This article can be used as a template on which you should build, depending on your physical state, as well as following the recommendations from your orthopedic specialist.

There’s No Rush

After the surgery, the joint will need some time to recover. While it is healing, work with your orthopedic specialist to establish a routine of gentle exercises that can get you up and moving again. These beginning exercises are usually done with a physical therapist, who ensures that you don’t push yourself too far.

Ice and Heat

Using an ice pack that’s wrapped in a towel can work to keep inflammation levels down, which may make it easier for individuals to keep at their exercises. A heating pad can also be a great aid in helping extend the range of motions during the recovering period.

Strength

Strength, combined with mobility, is a primary concern. Indeed, stronger muscles help take some of the impact away from the joints, which means that the implant will last for a longer period of time. Stretching is a great way of improving flexibility. Cycling on a stationary bike also helps improve range of motion, as well as strength. The good thing about a stationary bike is that it allows individuals to adjust the level of tension as they start improving.

No High Impact

Activities that have a high impact can put too much stress on the joints, including the new one. Make sure to avoid these as much as possible, since it can lead to dislocation or only partial healing.

Keep It Low Impact

Exercises that don’t impact the joints are great for those with joint replacements. Examples include cycling, which was mentioned above. Another option is golfing. Swimming or other forms of water exercises are all quite wonderful, as they give a great workout, without putting too much pressure on the joints.
