How does Mako Robotic Technology work?

The Mako technology allows your OSI surgeon to use a CT scan to create a 3D model of your knee’s unique anatomy. The personalized 3D plan takes into account each patient’s specific anatomy and ligament balance to ensure your OSI knee surgeon can see all angles of your knee and to create a surgery plan that can be adjusted if necessary during the surgery.

During the operation, your OSI surgeon uses the robotic arm to assist in performing your knee surgery. The surgeon guides the robotic arm within the predefined area, and the robotic arm technology helps the surgeon stay within the planned boundaries, which creates a more accurate and better-aligned knee replacement.

How long has the Mako procedure been available?

The first Mako procedure was a partial knee replacement performed in June 2006. Since that time, more than 83,000 Mako hip and knee replacement procedures have been performed around the world.

Does the Mako Robotic-Arm actually perform the surgery?

It’s important to understand that the Mako Robotic-Arm doesn’t actually perform surgery. Surgery is performed by your OSI orthopedic surgeon, who uses the Mako System software to pre-plan your surgery. During surgery, the Mako System helps your surgeon stay within the planned boundaries that were defined in your personalized, pre-operative plan. Your OSI knee or hip surgeon will guide the Mako Robotic Arm to remove diseased bone and cartilage. Then the surgeon will insert the full or partial knee or hip replacement.

How long do knee implants last?

Each person is unique in their anatomy and recovery time; not all patients will have the same postoperative recovery and activity level. The lifetime of a knee or hip replacement is not infinite and varies with each individual person. To enhance the recovery process, you are given access to OSI’s state-of-the-art Recovery Inn facility where post-operative care and rehabilitation takes place – all under the direction and watchful eye of your OSI surgeon.

What can I expect after Mako Robotic-Assisted surgery?

After Mako surgery, your OSI surgeon, nurses and physical therapists will set goals with you to get you back on the move. They will closely monitor your condition and progress. Your OSI surgeon may review a post-operative X-ray of your new knee with you.
